Cookies are stored on your computer by websites you visit and contain information such as site preferences or login status. This article describes how to delete Firefox cookies, other site data and cached web content.

A computer 'cookie' is more formally known as an HTTP cookie, a web cookie, an Internet cookie or a browser cookie. The name is a shorter version of 'magic cookie,' which is a term for a packet of data that a computer receives and then sends back without changing or altering it.

To delete cookies and site data for a website you're currently visiting:

Clear cookies for the current website. To delete cookies and site data for a website you're currently visiting: Click the Site Info button padlock at the left of the address bar. Click Clear Cookies and Site data. Clear cookies for any website. To delete cookies for any single website: Click the menu button and select Options. Next to 'Cookies and other site data' and 'Cached images and files,' check the boxes. Click Clear data. Learn how to change more cookie settings in Chrome. For example, you can delete cookies for a specific site. In other browsers. If you use Safari, Firefox, or another browser, check its support site for instructions. To delete cookies for any single website:

  1. Click the menu button and select ..
  2. Select the Privacy & Security panel and go to the Cookies and Site Data section.
  3. Click the button. The Manage Cookies and Site Data dialog will appear.
  4. In the Search websites field, type the name of the site whose cookies you want to remove. Items that match your search will be displayed.
    • To remove all cookies and storage data for the website, click .
    • To remove selected items, select an entry and click .
  5. Click .
  6. In the Removing Cookies and Site Data confirmation dialog that opens, click .
  7. Close the about:preferences page.

  1. Click the menu button and select ..
  2. Select the Privacy & Security panel and go to the Cookies and Site Data section.
  3. Click the button. The Clear Data dialog will appear.
    • Cookies and Site Data (to remove login status and site preferences) and Cached Web Content (to remove stored images, scripts and other cached content) should both be check marked.
  4. Click .

To delete only cookies while keeping other data, do the following:

  1. Click the menu button and click Library (or click the Library button in the toolbar).
  2. Click History and then click Clear Recent History….
  3. Set Time range to clear: to Everything.
  4. Select Cookies and make sure that other items you want to keep are not selected.
  5. Click to clear all cookies and close the Clear All History window.

Safari User Guide

You can change options in Safari preferences so that Safari always accepts or always blocks cookies and website data.

In the Safari app on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, click Privacy, then do any of the following:

  • Prevent trackers from using cookies and website data to track you: Select 'Prevent cross-site tracking.'

    Cookies and website data are deleted unless you visit and interact with the trackers' websites.

  • Always block cookies: Select 'Block all cookies.'

    Websites, third parties, and advertisers can't store cookies and other data on your Mac. This may prevent some websites from working properly.

  • Always allow cookies: Deselect 'Block all cookies.'

    Websites, third parties, and advertisers can store cookies and other data on your Mac.

  • Remove stored cookies and data: Click Manage Website Data, select one or more websites, then click Remove or Remove All.

    Removing the data may reduce tracking, but may also log you out of websites or change website behavior.

  • See which websites store cookies or data: Click Manage Website Data.

Note: Changing your cookie preferences or removing cookies and website data in Safari may change or remove them in other apps.
